The Theme of International Youth Day, 2020 is ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’.
According to United Nations, the aim of this theme is to shed light on the need to enable the engagement of youth making local, national and global Institutions more inclusive for the purpose of strengthening their capacity (and relevance) to achieve global action.
United Nations further put this year’s IYD spotlight on youth engagement through the following three interconnected streams:
1) Engagement at the Local/ Community level.
2) Engagement at the national level (Formulation of laws, policies and their implementation and
3) Engagement at the global level.
United Nations defines youth as persons between the ages of 15 and 24.
Youth in Nigeria includes Citizens of the Federal Republic if Nigeria, aged 18 – 29 years, according to the new youth policy.
However the African youth charter recognises youth as people between the ages of 18 – 35.
The youths are the future of tomorrow. They are energetic, enthusiastic and have the ability to learn and adapt to new changes, they are also willing to learn and act on it as well as to achieve their goals.
On the other hand, the youths are expected to advance in politics, groom themselves to be leaders of tomorrow, embrace current technology, education, and seek for peace of the country. They are also expected to maintain their culture and keep good values in the society etc.
Youths of today should prove the school of thought that calls them lazy wrong by living up to expectations.
According to Graca Machel, ‘Preventing the conflicts of tomorrow means changing the mindset of youth today’.
Investment in young people is one of the goals of MERCY WAVES FOUNDATION.
